Ms. Dieter’s uncle just recently became the principal in Tooksook Bay, Alaska. This small village is very desolate. The population is about 500, 98% Yupik Native Americans. They are in desperate need of many school supplies, clothing and games/toys for the children. She had the opportunity to visit the village this summer for about a week. She witnessed some of the poorest people and conditions I have ever seen. It seemed like a third world country, not part of the United States. Kids were playing with cardboard small boxes and string as their toys. Kids were drinking out of mud puddles. I have many more stories that I would love to share if interested.
Third grade at Lincoln has an incredible opportunity to help other students in need. We will collect items from the third grade students throughout the year. After we have collected supplies and toys from our students we will ship the items to the school several times this year.
Miss Dieter's uncle and the teachers at the school are very thankful for any and all of our donations. You can send items any time during the year. Every so often we will send a note home of possible items you could donate.
We also hope that we will be able to have contact with the Yupik students via letters or skype. This would just add to this awesome opportunity. When this part is all ironed out we will communicate this to you.
